In May of 2022 KES formed a Childcare Working Group, and hosted a meeting with community service providers and stakeholders.

This group utilized the results of the CitySpaces report to brainstorm possible solutions to the childcare crisis in our community.

Various parties participated including the Town of Creston, the Regional District of Central Kootenays, School District 8, the Yaqan Nukiy Band, Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, Child and Youth Services, a local counseling organization (Valley Community Services), the Childcare Resource and Referral, College of the Rockies, a staff member from Interior Health, and two local childcare providers.

KES has worked with the Ministry of Child and Family Development to understand the requirements of the New Spaces fund and has supported the Town of Creston in an application for new spaces. KES has also launched a pilot childcare program through the WorkBC employment program, supporting several residents from Creston to gain skills to open and operate childcare facilities.
